“Ah hell, it’s Sophia,” the cop said as he crouched next to the woman in Mason’s arms. “How do you know her?” Mason’s head jerked up and he eyed the cop. “She’s been looking for her brother again. He keeps running away from his foster home. She’s been searching for him the last four nights. I told her it wasn’t safe.” Mason looked down at the unconscious woman and agreed with the patrolman’s assessment. “How much longer before the ambulance arrives?” Mason clipped out the question. “How bad is she? What happened?” The cop nodded to where Mason’s jacket was covering Sophia’s torso. “They just got her top off, but they cut her pretty badly on the arm. I’ve got her bandaged and most of the bleeding stopped. She’s going to need a shit-load of stitches. What’s the ETA on the ambulance?” Mason shifted her gently as he again gave the cop a penetrating stare. “It’s about fifteen more minutes. There was a bad pile-up on the Five Freeway with fatalities. You did good work tonight. You military?” the cop asked as he assessed Mason. “SEAL.” “I was Navy too,” the cop said. “You okay with her while I work on getting these two assholes taken care of?” The cop nodded towards the two thugs who were sitting handcuffed in the alley and being looked after by his partner. “I’ve got her.” Mason looked down at Sophia again ensuring she was okay. “What about the girl who made the call?” “What girl?” the cop asked. Mason looked around and realized the girl and his phone were long gone. “There was another girl who looked like she’d been beaten too. She got me to come over here to help.” Mason gave the information like he was reporting to his commander. “She must have taken off after she called for help,” the officer said. “Oh no,” came the soft words. Mason looked down and saw green eyes clouded with worry looking up at him. “What? Did you say something Sophia?” he asked. “The girl is gone? She’s hurt.” It was hard to understand her through her bruised mouth. “Settle honey, you’re hurt. You need to stay calm and rest until the ambulance comes.” Mason watched as she struggled to get up, and then cried out in pain. She collapsed against him. Fuck, it had to be her shoulder. He’d already taken off his shirt and used it as a bandage and a tourniquet earlier. He eased back the leather jacket that he had placed over her to see if it had come loose. “Don’t move again, okay Sophia.” God, when would the ambulance get here? “You’ve got to find the girl I think they cut her too. I’ve got to get up, I need to look for Billy. Please don’t hold me down. I need to get up, let me up,” she damn near screamed the last few words. Mason realized she was delirious. The cop looked over at him and he shook his head. “Sophia, my name is Mason. We’re going to get you to the hospital. Do you understand me, honey?” He waited to see if she was tracking. She finally nodded. “Good, after they’re done taking care of you, you can come look for Billy again.” She relaxed a little, and he relaxed a little as well. “And the girl? Can I look for the girl too?” she begged him with big eyes. “Yes, you can look for the girl too.” He stroked the hair from her forehead. “Do you promise Mason?” She tried to lift her arm to grab the front of his jacket and let out a small shriek of pain. “Why does it hurt?” He saw her start to tremble and wrapped his jacket closer around her ensuring it was snug so she couldn’t move her arms any longer. “Are you warm now?” “Yes. Will I be able to go to work and then look for Billy tomorrow?” It took a moment for him to understand her, and when he did it took him a few seconds to formulate a response other than ‘Hell No’. “I think you’re going to be in the hospital for at least a couple of days.” “No, I hate hospitals, don’t make me go to the hospital.” He watched as tears dripped down her temples into her silky blonde hair. “Honey, you have to go you’ve been injured. A doctor has to help you.” She was trembling so bad he was worried she was going into shock. “I can’t afford a hospital. Can you take me home?” God, she was breaking his heart. “Let’s see what the doctor says first.” Mason heard the siren and Sophia must have heard it too. Somehow she pushed off the heavy leather coat. “No, no ambulance, no hospital. I have to find Billy.” She tried getting up one last time and groaned as she put pressure on her cut shoulder. “You’ve got to stay still.” He couldn’t believe the compassion this woman had, here she was bleeding and bruised, almost raped, and her entire concern was for her brother and the other girl. She was beautiful inside and out. Just then she gripped her head where he saw a large bruise and lump forming. He saw her green eyes begin to glaze over. “Honey, stay with me.” He brushed his fingers tenderly along her cheek willing her to stay awake. “Mason’s a nice name,” her words were slurred. Just as the EMT’s arrived she passed out. seal teaser 3-jpeg

And then I hear a voice that sends shivers up my spine.

“Hey there, Havoc, too comfy on your bed here to come say hello to your buddy Coen?”

Coen. Shit. He’s here. Why is he here? How the? What the fuck is he doing here?

My eyes spring open and I’m on high alert. Maybe he won’t realize it’s me.

“Hey, Josh.” He says. I can hear his footsteps getting closer.

I’m lying here with a half finished tattoo. It’s not like I can take off running right now.

Well, I could I guess, but who wants an incomplete tattoo?

“Hey, Coen. What’s new man? What are you getting today?” Josh asks him.

“Mike’s just going to do a few touch ups. Nothing major planned this visit.” Coen says.

Oh good. He already had this in his plans then. He isn’t some psycho stalker that followed me here. I hope.

Suddenly I feel his finger, ever so lightly graze up my arm. It sends shivers up my spine and sets my insides on fire and my pulse through the roof. Why does this man, who I’ve only just met, make me so damn crazy?

“Hi, Lexi.” I hear him say behind me. His voice vibrates straight to my core. “We meet again so soon! What are the odds?” Someone else catches his attention and he stops. “Oh, hey Mike, there you are!” he booms in that raspy, sexy, voice of his and I hear his footsteps leaving my side.

Josh pauses tattooing briefly, squinting at me, and says, “You two know each other?”

“Excuse me!” I wave a twenty-dollar bill in the air. I may be single and here with my drunk friend who is spewing ex-boyfriend-related vitriol, but at least I’ve got the money to do it. I work for one of the biggest biotech conglomerates in the world, although unfortunately, being the executive assistant of Harley Royce is basically being a glorified secretary to the world’s biggest douchebag. Let’s be honest—in the corporate world, “billionaire” equals “bastard.” The money’s great, but the work sucks. I’m surprised I’m not a bigger drinker after all.

“Hey!” I yell out again, but no dice. This is what I get for wearing work gear to the bar—what twenty-two-year-old do you know decides to rock a black blazer to happy hour? I feel like my mother. Or my grandmother. Or both.

“Let me see if I can help.”

I turn at the sound of the voice but, when our eyes meet, I’m rendered momentarily stunned. Like elephant-dart-to-the-brain stunned.

Hello, gorgeous.

The beefcake bartenders—sure, they’re hot in a conventional, Magic Mike sort of way. But this guy? He’s hot-hot. Universally hot. Ryan Gosling hot.

He’s wearing a dark suit—well-cut, grey wool, probably designer—and his dark-brown hair is neatly cropped, but he’s got a day or so of sexy scruff along his jawline. He looks like he just came in from a board meeting, but that he could have been rebuilding a carburetor yesterday. Put him in coveralls and he’d be your mechanic.

(Your sexy as hell mechanic who you’d want bending you over the hood of your car after he changed the oil…)

“Yo, Bradshaw!”

He calls out at one bartender who’s leaning halfway over the bar with his face an inch away from being buried in a blonde girl’s cleavage. Bradshaw’s head pops up, one eyebrow raised.

“Landon—dude. Sorry, I didn’t see you there.” He sidles down to our end of the bar. “What can I get you?”

Landon gestures to me. “Ladies first.”

I blink at him. The words won’t come. My mouth and lips feel parched and unable to ask for the one thing they want—a drink. Or Landon’s tongue in my mouth. Whichever comes first.

“Hmm.” He presses his index finger to his lips—his full, gorgeous, sensual lips. “You look like a martini drinker.”

Honestly, I’m not—martinis are more of my boss’s kind of cocktail—something with one hundred dollars’ worth of vodka and at least a dozen olives.

“Dirty?”

My eyes fly back up to his and his dark brow is cocked.

“Excuse me?” I manage to say. It’s more like a squeak.

“Dirty?” he repeats. “A dirty martini?”

Oh. Because that was totally what I was thinking when he said that word. Sure.

“Um, yes. Please. Thank you.”

button excerpt
The doors closed behind us. Jagger backed me up against the wall, and there was nowhere I could look but his eyes. One knee was between my legs, and his hands burned the skin on my stomach underneath my sweater. “You look amazing,” he whispered. I hadn’t planned anything special for tonight. New underwear, that was all. Maybe I should’ve paid more attention to Kari when she told me about the schedule. I’d worn a sweater, scarf, jeans, and knee-high boots. “So do you,” I murmured back. Jagger was one step ahead of me in black dress pants and a deep blue button down shirt. It perfectly complemented his olive skin and dark hair. The more I thought of Jagger in terms of art, the more beautiful he became. Jagger cupped my bra as his lips once again found mine. We could barely complete a sentence since he’d come to my room without our mouths crashing against each other. Going to this party was a terrible idea. After a drink or two I’d be begging him to take me on the bar. His fingers drew slow circles, dipping inside my bra, brushing back and forth against my nipples. They pebbled at his touch. I tangled my hands in his long hair, pulling him closer to me as I moaned against his mouth. I hadn’t even noticed we weren’t moving until the alarm went off. We jumped away from each other. “What did you do?” I asked. “Didn’t you just hit the lobby button?” “I hit stop.” Jagger had his hands up like he was about to get arrested. “You can’t do that here.” I slammed my hand repeatedly against the lobby button to make the alarm stop screaming. The elevator started moving. “The fire department is probably already on their way. This is a small town. They’ll be talking about this until the next reunion.” My stomach tied itself in knots complicated enough to flummox a boy scout as we walked through the lobby. The older woman at the front desk glared at us. “See?” I bumped against Jagger, who smiled and winked at the clerk. She turned bright red as she looked back to the computer. “We were seconds away from thanking the firemen for their commitment to service.” Every head in the bar turned as we walked in. I made a beeline for the bartender, pulling Jagger along with me. He ordered our drinks. “You didn’t ask me what I wanted.” “Don’t you want sangria?” He surprised me even more by pulling out his wallet. “You practically purred when you drank it in Washington. I’m not sure what you liked more, me or the sangria. But I know I liked the way it tasted on your lips.” “How did you even know they had it? Some places throw bar garnish and Sprite into cheap wine and try to pass it off as the nectar of the Gods.” I leaned back against the bar, hooking my boot into the barstool, trying to play this cool. If Jagger had any idea he could knock me over with a feather right now he might stop trying so hard. I wanted to see what else he had in him. “They can’t fool me with that crap.” “I checked before you got here.” Jagger tapped his glass against mine before taking a long sip of whatever he got. I knew all along they had it. I’d been here more times than I could count. “And if they didn’t?” “We’d find someplace that did.” Those hazel eyes smoldered. So many emotions I couldn’t read yet marched through them. I put the glass down on the bar and turned back to him. It took everything I had to keep my hands to myself. “And if that wasn’t what I was craving?” Jagger leaned closer to me and I could feel every eye on the room on us. “I will make sure you’re satisfied.” We took stools at the bar. It was still pretty early. A cover band I’d been going to see since my twenties was setting up in the corner, and only a handful of my classmates had shown up so far. I wondered if we’d see many locals. Getting a babysitter two nights in a row was such a bitch. “So that’s Eric. He went out to LA to act and he’s had a bunch of bit parts in movies, and it looks like he’s here with…” I squinted to see better, then squealed when he took the hand of someone I didn’t expect. “Michael. Nice. I think he’s still in the Marines. I knew he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, but I didn’t realize they were a couple. It makes total sense, now that I think about it, they’re always together in their Facebook stuff.” After finding the bottom of my drink, I had no problem openly pointing out the weekend’s players to Jagger. A fresh drink appeared like magic, and I dove right into it. “And that’s Marcy. She was my manager at Design Spot. We used to put wine in our coffee cups to deal with the monotony of that place. Oh, God. You must think I’m a total lush, right?” “No.” Jagger laughed. “Which one is Karina?” I had to think about before answering him. “Who’s Karina?” “Your best friend?” Jagger slid the glass away from me. “The guys at the agency have nothing but good things to say about her.” “Oh! Kari.” I took it back. “I never think of her like that. Unless I’m giving her a hard time. Her reputation would precede her.” Good for her. “I don’t know. She should be here. She’s technically our host.” She’d been coy in the last couple weeks, much more concerned with my plans for the reunion than sharing hers. Probably because being here was just as much of a nightmare for her as it was for me, even if our reasons were completely different. She’d definitely bring a date to the battle ground. The band started, tearing through their nineties set with slightly less fire than they had in the actual nineties, and Jagger started drumming the beat against the bar. “Let’s dance,” he suggested. “Sounds fantastic.” After the second sangria it easier to join the few other couples on the floor, and I waved to the people I’d pointed out from the bar. So far, we weren’t behind enemy lines. None of those people had shown up yet. I twirled around Jagger, singing the lyrics of the song to him as he put his arms around my waist and pressed my back against his body. We swayed together to the beat, his hair falling into my face as he joined me on the harmonies. I turned into him when the song changed, our hips grinding to the raunchy beat of the song. If this was any indication of what I had to look forward to when we went back upstairs, I had no idea why we were still here. Jagger’s hands stayed on my hips, directing them, and I hooked my arms around his neck. His forehead rested on mine and I could only look at him. The rest of the room spun on a different axis. I hadn’t had too much to drink, I was drunk off of Jagger. “Can I have this dance?” Kari managed to wedge herself between the two of us and I grabbed her arms to steady myself from the shock. She swung around, offering a hand to Jagger. “I’m Karina Gomez. Leah’s best friend. And I’m a United States prosecutor, so when I say I know where to hide the bodies…” “Kari!” I jerked her away from Jagger before she said anything I regretted. “I’ve heard all about you. Nothing but wonderful things of course.” Jagger ran his fingers under my chin. Kari didn’t release her death grip on my arms. “I’ll meet you over at the bar.” My new dance partner spun me around. “First of all, he’s insanely gorgeous. I don’t get intimidated by many men, but it’s hard to breathe looking at him.” “Where have you been?” I asked. I wanted to change the subject before it turned into a lecture. “Here, for like a half an hour.” Kari rolled her eyes. “You were too busy eye-fucking your escort to notice anyone.” My head whipped around the room. “Oh God, who else is here?” “Pretty much everyone, and you are the topic of conversation.” “Why?” Another quick scan of the room, but I didn’t spot Rich or Shelley. “Because the two of you look like you’re going to crawl inside of each other. We’re all choking off the pheromones. Would you please go upstairs and fuck his brains out before some of the single ladies in the crowd abduct him?” Nobody had to tell me twice. “Yes, ma’am.” I headed off the dance floor, but Kari still had my hand. “Don’t ever call me ma’am.” Kari yanked me back into her. “Leah, please be careful tonight.” “I will, ma’am.” I laughed when Kari looked like she might puke. “I brought protection.” She squeezed my hand. “That’s not what I’m talking about, and you know it.”

Something inside of me that I’d nurtured for years refused to allow me to lie on the ground and tremble in fear. No matter what life threw at me, I wasn’t one to cower from a challenge.
I pushed myself up onto my knees and then I stood up. The smell of fresh rain surrounded me as I struggled to hear any sounds. Slowly I turned to see the wolf watching me with its amber eyes.
