By Melissa Pearl

January 30, 2015

Caitlyn Davis expects
her sophomore year at UCLA to be perfect...until she walks into her dorm room
to find Special Agent Zoey Kaplan of the FBI waiting for her. In that instant,
she knows her idyllic year with new best friends, Nicole and Dale, along with
her super hot boyfriend, Eric, is about to fall apart.

Having been forced to
work with the FBI months earlier, Caity accidentally gave away her special
ability to read people's emotions and know whether they were telling the truth.
Now, Kaplan wants Caity to go undercover again for a secret operation that will
bring her close to the sadistic Diego Mendez, a man believed to be involved in
human trafficking.

Eric Shore is not a
man who trusts easily. Having been burned multiple times, it’s hard for him to
open up completely, but his love for Caity makes him want to try. Yet, her
sudden withdrawal worries him, particularly when she chooses to spend time with
her new roommate, Quella Mendez, over him. When Caity’s behavior begins to
match that of her wild roommate, Eric wonders if their relationship is as
strong as he believed.

As Caity struggles to
maintain her relationship and do her job, she finds herself pulled further into
a dangerous world that could take away everything she holds dear. Will Eric
learn the truth in time to save her? Or will the man with the eyes of a snake
destroy their perfect romance?

Synopsis

I never imagined things could get worse, but they do. The men who took us show no mercy. They won’t stop until they’ve destroyed Rafe for something he has no memory of, and I’m their weapon of choice.

Tortured and defiled, they make me wish I was back in that cabin where death was favorable to drawing another breath, but our captors can’t break what’s already broken.

What scares me is the madness I see festering inside Rafe. I’ve taken his freedom, his career, his reputation, yet despite all I’ve done, he’s determined to fight for me, kill for me, give everything he is for me.

He’ll even die for me.

Excerpt #1:
I blinked my eyes as I looked up at the ceiling. Music from downstairs came into my room and woke me up. I looked at my alarm clock. It was twenty after six. I rolled onto my side and opened my nightstand drawer. I retrieved the orange medication bottle and sat up. I dumped out the contents into a small pile on my pastel pink comforter.

One, two, three, four, five, six…

I counted the white pills as I put them back into the bottle.

Seven, eight, nine, ten…

I wondered if I belonged at one of those meetings for people with addiction problems.

I imagined myself standing in front of a room of strangers.

“Hi, I’m Roxanne, and I…”

I…what?

“And I’m a…”

The room I was standing in suddenly got a lot smaller. As I looked out at all the faces staring back at me, my stomach twisted. Those weren’t the faces of complete strangers. Every face now belonged to my mom.

The word addict stuck in my throat, choking me.

But I wasn’t an addict. I could stop at any time.

I beheld my mom’s face. Her beautiful blue eyes that had once
shined with pride for me were now full of disappointment. I hated seeing her looking
at me like that.

“You know me. I didn’t used to be this way. I have a good reason for using your pills. I need them. It’s the only thing that eases the pain.” I was begging for her to understand.

But her expression of disappointment stayed with me, even as each one of her disappeared.

The sound of a slamming door downstairs pulled me back to reality.
I glanced around my room, feeling empty. I shook my head, trying to forget the image
of my mom’s face.

Excerpt #2:
“Full disclosure—my ex-boyfriend, who wrecked my world, is about to walk by. I’m begging you to please pretend to know me.” I knew how pathetic I sounded, but I would kick myself for that later.

He slightly tilted his head to the right and gave me a confused smile. Then, he just stood there and gaped at me. I was now seriously doubting the whole honesty-is-always-the-best-policy idea. It sure as hell wasn’t helping me.

“Roxy?” Kevin called out from a few feet away.

My insides twisted into knots at the sound of Kevin’s voice.

Please just kill me now.

I didn’t know what I was thinking.

Oh, right, I wasn’t.

I stepped forward, wrapped my arms around the sexy stranger’s neck, and pressed my lips to his.

Yeah, so this is way more than I asked from him.

Please don’t push me away.

I was trying to will this guy not to call me out. Surprise and relief flooded my body as I felt his arms wrap around my waist, and he returned the kiss. His tongue grazed my lips. I parted them, allowing him access.

Wow…

People shouldn’t just grab strangers off the street and kiss them, but damn, this guy could kiss.

***REVIEW***

Face the Music: A Dauntless Indies Anthology

Synopsis

One sprawling music festival
Five jaw-dropping stories

Seattle is a mecca for the music, arts, and eclectic. Every year, the Emerald City hosts the highly anticipated Bumbershoot, four days of unique bands, colorful artists, and untold memories.

What better place to find, or lose yourself, than this melting pot of culture?

Slip into the crowds as the music draws you in, but beware: not everything is as it seems. Delicious secrets and startling legends abound.

***Shawn's Review***

5 Stars!!!

I am one often inclined to order a “Sampler” menu item at a restaurant. This anthology is like a sampler of only the best the menu has to offer. And what better place to get a sampling of the best than a music festival? Seattle’s Bumbershoot, no less.

Unbound Adventures #1 (A White Aura Short) by Felicia Tatum
Tatum writes a fast-paced paranormal adventure centered around Elsie and Kyle. We’re treated to supernatural “mixes,” including sorcerers, faes and vampires. What self-respecting paranormal lover wouldn’t love those combinations? Tatum’s story is unique, her writing is good and we’re left wanting more from this duo.

Red Queen (An Others of Seattle Short) by Brandy L. Rivers
We’ve come to expect strong, badass characters (including strong females which I love), over-the-top dialogue and lots of heat from Rivers, and she does not disappoint in Red Queen! This short is well-developed, fun, classic Rivers and is a great standalone from her Others series.

Trouble with Partners (The Misadventures of Maggie Moore 2) by Michelle Graves
Maggie and John are back! Graves has created a fun, quirky, dare I say accident-waiting-to-happen, character in Maggie Moore. Graves became one of my favorites with her Chronicles of Izzy series and continues to impress with Maggie. This short is a super quick read as it’s light and fun and such a great escape. Definitely can’t wait for more from Moore!

Dark Blessing (A Crimson & Clover Lagniappe) by Sarah M. Cradit
Cradit ventured out into the world of vamps with this C&C lagniappe, and I’m oh-so-happy she did! We follow Kelley Landry and Queen Edith (I mean, with a name like that, who wouldn’t love you?) from New Orleans to Bumbershoot in Seattle on a most riveting adventure. This short is smart, well-written and classic Cradit in that we’re treated to unique, unforgettable characters. Great read!

A Case of Possession (An Aiden and Idonie Adventure) by Michele Breaux-Rowley
Woot…Idonie and Aiden are back! The Cajuns traded the south for Seattle in this short and treated us to a most enjoyable adventure. This is the second story we’ve had the pleasure of reading from Breaux-Rowley, and she certainly brought it! Her writing style is one of a kind, and she has created endearing characters that I, for one, feel like I know. Breaux-Rowley melds mystery and comedy like nobody’s business, and I can’t wait for more from her. A full-length, maybe?

This is a super entertaining anthology, and I can’t wait for the next one from these super talented authors!
