Take a risk.
Do something drastic.
Fall in love.

When Amberlyn Reilly loses her mother, her whole world comes crashing down. Having been caretaker to her for most of her teenage years, Amberlyn is inexperienced in many aspects of life. She hasn’t had time to live, have fun, or enjoy even the little things. It’s only when a letter from her mother, asking her to fulfill three things, sends her off to Ireland to live a life she never thought possible that she begins to heal.

Declan O’Callaghan was born and raised in Ireland and has his family’s legendary whiskey in his veins. He’s shy and not a fan of the pressure and spotlight that comes with his family name, or the title he was given at birth—the Whiskey Prince. Declan knows just what he wants and that is to take over the family dynasty, but when his father gives him an ultimatum, everything he’s worked for could come undone in the blink of an eye.

With six months to get married, the reclusive Declan spots Amberlyn across a lake and instantly feels the need to know her. Soon, the two find themselves traveling down a path neither expected. However, like any road, there are bumps and side streets to derail them. Can Declan help find the pieces that will make Amberlyn whole again? And will Amberlyn stay or run when she learns of Declan’s deadline of marriage?

Review~Sacred Choices~Karen Hulene Bartell

Synopsis

An inspirational love story centered on self-growth, Sacred Choices weaves together the lives of three resilient women. Ceren is a newly-married and pregnant professor who learns her husband is a bigamist who urges abortion. Judith, Ceren's colleague - an older, more worldly professor and pro-choice advocate - provides counsel based on her experiences. Judith's sister Pastora, a nun, provides the voice of reason. Written for, by, and about women who have had or are considering abortions, Sacred Choices is Ceren's journey - from her positive pregnancy test, through her decision whether or not to have an abortion - to an uncanny conclusion. Sacred Choices has an offbeat charm steeped in the supernatural. The protagonists' search for the answer to whether it is the Aztec goddess Tonantzin or Our Lady of Guadalupe who has been revered for the past 500 years is interrupted by a giggling, young girl, who appears only to Judith. Is she a figment of Judith's imagination, a vision - or could she be an angel, as Pastora believes? Set near Mexico City and incorporating present-day Hispanic and ancient Aztec beliefs, culture, and cuisine, Sacred Choices deeply celebrates the triumph of the spirit.

About Karen Hulene Bartell

Born to rolling-stone parents who moved annually, Dr. Karen Hulene Bartell found her earliest playmates as fictional friends in books. Paperbacks became her portable pals. Ghost stories kept her up at night—reading feverishly. The paranormal was her passion. Wanderlust inherent, she enjoyed traveling, although loathed changing schools. Novels offered an imaginative escape. An only child, she began writing her first novel at the age of nine, learning the joy of creating her own happy endings.

Karen Hulene Bartell resides in the Hill Country with her husband Peter and her mews—three, soon-to-be four, rescued cats.

Michele's Review

An interesting offering from Karen Hulene Bartell. I was very hesitant to read this book. It sat in my review request folder for many weeks before I finally made the decision to read it. Why? Because as a person of faith, I was afraid of what a book like this could contain. Would it be anti-God? Pro-choice? Church bashing? You get the picture here. I finally decided that I would read it. I am extremely glad that I did.

While the book flowed extremely well and made for an easy read, there were parts of the story that were difficult to read due to the subject matter. Deep, thought provoking, and complex were the range of emotions I experienced reading this book and were nothing short of a brilliant accomplishment on the part of Ms. Bartwell. I will be a big girl here and admit, there was more than one ugly cry. There were many story lines to follow throughout, however, each facet of the story came together like an intricately woven textile, I can see the potential for more stories from the different characters. I love the character Sister Pastora, I believe that she embodies the indomitable spirit of every Sister that I know.I look forward to learning more of their stories, especially hers and Judith/Faith’s.

Speaking of characters, well written characters, great depth, the 3 female leads were very different from each other, but found their way to work together toward a common goal. This was a story of their very different lives and how they intersect through choices, experiences, and influences. It was also a moving tribute to finding lost faith, finding yourself, discovering that you are not alone in the universe, but most importantly, the message that I found most profound, was the message of the power of love and forgiveness.

Ok, now for the nitty gritty, there were some details of Catholicism that weren’t exactly correct, I think I understand the reasoning for the liberties, mostly with divorce and annulment. All in all, I don’t think it detracts from the story, in fact, it creates more confusion for the characters. It illustrates what Jarek was trying to put over on Ceren more effectively for the confusion that it does cause. Overall, I am giving Sacred Choices 5 stars, without hesitation. I think the story was executed extremely well, and I would not hesitate to recommend this book. There is so much more that I want to say about this book, but I think it would be better for you to pick it up and discover it for yourself, it’s a personal journey. I look forward to more stories from the author!

I was gifted a copy for an honest review.

REVIEW! Villere House (Blood of My Blood)

Villere House (Blood of My Blood)

by Leslie Fear & C.D. Hussey

Synopsis:

College senior, Lottie Boyd, expects to drink too much while on spring break in New Orleans. What she doesn't expect is to be haunted. Or fall in love. But that's exactly what happens.

It starts with strange, vivid dreams about a 19th century widow so desperate to save her sick little girl, she's willing to do anything--even if it involves the black magic of Voodoo. It doesn't end there. Voices, ghost sightings, familiarity with things and places she couldn't possibly know. All leading her to the Villere House of Voodoo and the young Creole owner, Xavier Villere.

Xavier is compelled to help and is drawn to Lottie in a way he's never known, but skepticism of his family's century-old link to Voodoo and the occult keep her at arms length. If he can only come to terms with his heritage, he might be able to help solve the mystery of the widow plaguing Lottie's dreams. And maybe even find love in the process.

Note: Villere House is an adult romance and not suitable for readers under 18.

Shawn's Review

5 Hauntingly Amazing Stars!!!

Oh. My. Gosh.  How much did I LOVE this book??  Enough that it’s going on my Favorites of 2014 list, that’s how much!  I know, I know, this book has been out since 2013, but I just had the opportunity to read it.  And oh boy, am I glad I did!  Villere House has all the things I love in a book…mystery, action, romance and intrigue, for starters.  I love a good ghost story.  When you throw a well-written voodoo storyline, I’m there!

The cast of characters are phenomenal, but especially our two leads, Lottie and Xavier.  Oh, Xavier!  He’s hot, he’s sexy, he’s sensitive, and he’s so thoughtful.  Can I have a Xavier please?  Lottie is an empathetic character and one that you will root for.  She is really quite selfless; however, because she’s been through so much in her short lifetime, you have to look past her tough exterior and her insecurities to see her heart.

And the setting!  Oh, the setting!  What’s not to love about New Orleans?  A native of South Louisiana, I was thrilled to read about familiar places and things.  References to the French Market, Muffalettas from Central Grocery, Barq’s root beer, Oak Alley, Tulane University, Treme, second-line parades, I could go on, but you get the idea.  The authors did their research, and they did it well.  It comes across in the accuracy of the book, and for that, I am so appreciative.

Seriously y’all, get this book NOW!  It’s a definite page-turner. You won’t want to break for the husband, the kids, dinner; you’ll probably bring it with you to the bathroom!  I’m actually kind of glad I wanted until now to read Villere House because now I don’t have long to wait for Bayou Grise, the second book in the Blood of my Blood series!

Villere House…one of my favorite books of 2014!  Hussey and Fear…two authors that I will be stalking from this point forward!  I hope y’all are ready!

Author Bio:
For those who do not know me, I am the author of romance novel Impulses and the upcoming romantic suspense/mystery trilogy, The Dark Evoke Series.
Raised in a creative family, witnessing one another expressing themselves through creativity, albeit musically or through a form of literature, it was only a matter of time before my passion for devising characters and their unique stories in their own world, began to form and grow. From there the seed was sown and flourished into a young girls dream.Throughout the years I have often toyed with the idea of pursuing this path, yet unknowing where to begin. There are so many routes in this day and age to help get from A to B, that the dream was both tangible and terrifying. So with that, and after a few months of kicking myself into gear thanks to a certain someone, I decided to self-publish, and that decision was most probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.I am a mother of a five year old son who knows how to keep me on my toes, and married my high school sweetheart 6 years ago. I can't express how supportive and understanding both have been while pursuing this journey. If I'm not writing I'm constantly thinking about writing and can be found either chasing my son around, or with my nose in book.

TEASERS:

EXCERPT:

Elizabeth Sullivan

Elizabeth woke abruptly, sweat pooling at her brow. Her dreams only grew to levels this vivid when their reality was imminent.
Beside her, Connor lay snoring, undisturbed. He had never, not in the nearly twenty-five years they’d been married, had trouble sleeping through his wife’s episodes. She could wake screaming at the top of her lungs and he would continue on in uninterrupted, restful bliss.
As a seer, Elizabeth often saw glimpses of the future. When awake, her visions were unreliable; she was only given snippets, and much of what she saw was open to interpretation. When dreaming, however, they were painfully lucid. She could see the future in all its terror or glory, and there was no filter to help ease the burden.
Of course, as a Deschanel, this ability was not wholly unique. Her relatives were healers, empaths, and other powerfully “gifted” individuals. But the rest of them experienced things in the now. They lay their hands on someone sick and that person was healed. They sensed disquiet in another and helped soothe it. Elizabeth only ever saw what was to come. And if it came to her in a dream, it always, without fail, came to pass.
She glanced at the clock: two in the morning. Connor would be waking in a few hours to head in to the law firm. Tristan, her son, would be dead to the world until lunchtime.
Though Tristan did not figure into her dream—thank God, she could not lose another child to this wretched Curse—she still had a pressing urge to check on him. Since he was born, nearly twenty-one years ago to the day, she always feared he would stop breathing in his sleep. Some nights, even now, she sat at his bedside and watched his chest rise and fall. She’d done the same thing for Danielle too, but now Danielle was gone.
This was the life Elizabeth Sullivan led day in and day out: one of fear. Fear the Deschanel Curse would continue to strike those she loved. Terror it might take Tristan, as it had Danielle.
Tristan lay askew in his old childhood bed, long legs dangling out from the side of his sheets. Elizabeth released the sigh she’d been holding in, and sat quietly on the pine chest beside his bed. Once filled with toys and plush friends, now it lay stuffed with forgotten sports gear and a messy stack of dog-eared video game magazines.
He wasn’t in the vision. He was safe, she kept telling herself. But years later, she was still unable to get the sight of her only daughter, lying broken in the street, out of her head. Eyes open, closed, it did not matter. That image was burned in her heart and mind for all of time. It was a wound that would never heal, and a grief she would never recover from.
Though Tristan was safe (for now), there were others in the family, people she loved, who were not. Nieces and nephews she watched grow up. Children who never would.
And there was nothing—not one thing—Elizabeth could do to stop it. It was going to happen. The only unknown was when.

TOUR-EXCERPT

The moon shone bright over a crystal clear lake. Thousands of stars were reflected, like floating diamonds sparkling. The breeze blew gently through red cedar, pine, and maple. The clean mountain air reminded him of camping with his family when he was a boy. It had been so long since he had the liberty, and desire, to enjoy nature. The water called to Devlin. Carefully, without a sound, he pulled the clothes from his body and placed them on the stump beside him. With a slow breath, he walked into the gentle ripples, creating larger crests of his own. Warm water greeted him. He dove under, swimming deeper. A splash caught Devlin’s attention. He broke the surface to find nothing, and no one. Closing his eyes, he reached out with his senses. A lone werewolf was close. Panic flared through him, and he started for the shore, but a woman surfaced before him. A slow smile spread on her face when he flailed back, splashing her in his surprise. “Your heart’s pounding.” Amusement sparkled in her pale blue topaz eyes as she placed one small hand over his chest. Warmth washed through him offering a calm he couldn’t remember ever feeling. Yet, he was terrified the Dales were tracking him. A dream, nothing more than a dream. They can’t find me, he reminded himself. “You startled me,” Devlin replied. “Hmm.” Her foot brushed against his calf, sending a shiver through his entire body. She tapped her finger to her chin. “You remind me of someone, but I can’t figure out who.” Intrigued, and certainly heading toward aroused, he asked, “What makes you say that?” One corner of her shiny pink mouth lifted impishly. “Don’t know, but you do.” Her voice had taken on a husky purr which effectively made his blood pump faster. A dream, just a dream, he told himself. Then he did something bold, something he hadn’t done in so long he was sure he’d fail, even in a fantasy. “What’s a sweet little wolf like you doing out here all alone?” Her giggle was melodic as her already dazzling eyes lit up. “Looking for love in all the wrong places.” As if on cue, his resistance broke. Her tiny waist fit perfectly in his hands, her hips flared in a way that made him groan. Devlin propelled them closer to the shore, until his feet touched bottom. Before he could make his move, her legs locked around his hips and her fingers caressed up his shoulder and neck to delve into his hair. She grazed her lips over his. Afraid to take things too far, he slid his hands up her back, pressing her full breasts against his chest. Needing more of her taste, he deepened their kiss. Devlin felt more alive than he could remember. A dream, just a blasted dream, his brain chimed in. The knowledge didn’t stop him from sweeping his tongue into her mouth when she opened to him. Her body undulated in tune with his, and her heated core slid against his hardened length. The urge to bury himself in her was too much. Pulling back, he panted, “Your name? Need your name, Precious.” “Precious?” She licked her lips as she stared back at him with something like awe in her big blue eyes. He tipped his forehead to hers and breathed in her wild but seductive scent. “You’ve set me free of my old life. You’ve given me something to look forward to.” He didn’t know where the words came from, but he didn’t dare take them back. They felt right. “Jamie Abrams. You better come to me.” There was a command hidden in her sweet sassy voice, one he truly wanted to obey. “I’ll be waiting.” He nodded, rolling her name through his head like a fine wine over his tongue.
