Author Spotlight~S.M. Knowles

~*~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~*~

S.M. Knowles was born in Elmira, New York where she was swept away in a whirlwind to the Land of Oz—Independence, Kansas. Her parents were relocating for working opportunities and decided that this would be the perfect place to start new roots. Little did she know that this place would contribute to the inspiration for the first book she wrote in her Rylee Everley Series.
While growing up, S.M. would travel the roads around her house while imagining she was somewhere else. Her imagination would take her everywhere, making the long hot summer days seem shorter throughout her fantasies.
At the age of twelve, she decided to write her first book. Filled mostly with dialog, she filled up one-hundred pages, front and back. After taking the book downstairs to show her mom, and persuading her to buy her more paper, she excitedly ran back to her room. As she barreled through the door, S.M. tripped over items left on her floor, and her papers came raining down in her room. Discouraged, she stood there in tears, picking up her papers and throwing them in the trash. Her work had no organization, no numbers on her pages, just a child fulfilling a joy that she would put down and not pick up again.
When she became older, she joined the military for something different. In that time, she was able to explore many places and even met her husband in Iraq. After coming home, she started her family in Arizona and went back to school, earning a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Training.

~*BOOK LIST*~
*The Rylee Everley series*

With tears and a tight hug, Rylee Everley’s dad left for Afghanistan with the Army Reserve. Since his deployment, her mom has been distant, her sisters are constantly fighting, and Rylee, at only thirteen years old, has to be the glue to keep them together. While her mother stays locked in her room, Rylee has been forced into the role of parent.

Now, two years later, a freak accident involving a bus at school promises to restore some normality to her family. In spite of not knowing how their father is, her mother is happy and her sisters don’t seem to fight as much as they used to. Rylee herself is seeing more of her friends and is even trying to sort out her own feelings about Brock Parker. However, something dark threatens to disrupt that normality for personal gain, and that darkness is willing to break every rule to get what it wants.

Since her father disappeared while in Afghanistan, Rylee Everley has been taking things one day at a time. After burying their friend over the summer, she and her friends returned to school for their junior year. While her friends are worried about career choices and the future, she hangs on to a secret. Witches exist, and they live here among us. She has been asked to help vanquish a half witch who has caused some problems with only a wisp trapped in a necklace to help her, her own manifesting gifts, and cryptic dreams to guide her.

To top it all off, her childhood friend, and crush, has been acting really strange ever since he started dating Adysin. He ditched the football team, and he acts like a totally different person. They were once so close, and now she finds herself missing him and feeling guilty for pushing him away. Is this just concern for a friend she’s feeling or could it be love? Can Rylee save her childhood friend from a witch who’s willing to go to any length and pay any price to keep him?

Starting their senior year at a new school, Rylee, Lyla, Brock, Garrett, and Cole soon realize that Pothercrest isn’t any ordinary school. After speaking with her parents for the first time since arriving at Pothercrest, Lyla mysteriously disappears without a trace, but will they ever find her again? While searching for their friend, an unexpected visitor arrives with information Rylee never sees coming.

Adysin has managed to get into the school undetected and is on a mission to regain Brock as hers. Will Rylee and her friends ever rid themselves of Adysin and her obsession with controlling others? Something even darker than Adysin and her evil ways is stirring though, something no one is prepared for.
*Runaway (as Aubrey Kendall)*

At seventeen years old, Courtney Apuzzo is fed up. With a dead mom and an alcoholic father that beats her every chance he gets, Courtney decides that enough is enough. Packing up only what she needs, Courtney leaves home without telling a soul and heads off to find her new life.

Life on her own is not exactly as she thought it would be. With nowhere to stay, Courtney finds herself sleeping on an old stoop in an abandoned apartment alleyway. A chance meeting with a new group of friends seems like a great beginning to her second chance at a real life. But everything is not as it seems.

Tricked into a life she never wanted and fears, Courtney needs to run away, again. She needs to find a way out of this new and dangerous life. With the help from a man she barely knows, will Courtney find her way out? Or will she find herself on the run from a dangerous past, and a hopeless future? Faced with a choice that will change her life forever.

~~SUMMARY~~

Zombified-3D-Paperback-eReader

Monsters generally know their place: vampires get to be sexy while zombies just decompose. But Maggie La Croixs Zombified conjures up an entirely different kind of undead raised by good old-fashioned Voodoo. These gorgeous walking corpses dont eat brain, they dont stagger, and their bodies are spared the indignities of putrefaction.

Take Henri Jolicoeur. More than one hundred years after his death he is still a bewitching Adonis. But zombification does have its downsides. Henri has a master, a powerful Voodoo priest whose spells keep Henri, his teenage zombie sister, and five other poor souls in perpetual servitude.

That is, until a hurricane devastates their New Orleans home and the zombies are evacuated to the Texas border town of El Paso. The curse is broken. They are free and intend to stay that way. But how can they pass for human when they dont eat or sleep and theyre reeling from black magic withdrawal? If that isnt enough, they have a traitor in their midst, their master is hot on their trail, and a mysterious stranger in black is watching.

Enter Josie Cortez, a cowboy boots-wearing reporter at the local newspaper who desperately needs a good story to save her moribund career and get her editor off her back. One look at Henri and his weird little family and she knows shes struck journalism gold. But strange things keep happening around Henri, things that remind Josie of her own tragic family history with black magic, a history that cost her her beloved mother and led Josie straight to the bottom of a bottle. Josie would rather forget all about that. Forgetting Henri, however, is easier said than done, even if falling for a man without a heartbeat could get her more than a broken heart. It could get her zombified.

~~Michele's Review~~

Super fun, sexy, extremely humanizing story of a zombie—think voodoo, not brain eaters— named Henri Jolicoeur and his fellow zombie slaves struggles in a mortal world, while on the lam from their abusive and disgusting master, due to a fortuitous natural disaster.  Toss in a depressed, teetering on alcoholic, soon to be has been journalist named Josie Cortez and suddenly we have a complex story of life, murder, magic, love, family, and um— rebirth?

Maggie LaCroix has set a new bar for zombie stories to be measured against.  Her ‘monsters’ are entertaining, extremely human and actually make you feel for them.  I would have to say, Ti Pierre was my favorite, you have to watch out for those quiet ones!  Josie on the other hand wasn’t very likeable at first, but she came around and I can’t wait to see what is in store, at least, I am hoping there are further books with these characters! I want to know more about all of their stories and see from their points of view! Extremely well done flashbacks, left me wanting more more more!

This story, while short, was complex with many story lines, but nothing was left unanswered. A great first novel. I am looking forward to watching Ms. LaCroix grow and blossom!  4.5 Stars!  Highly recommended  read!

~~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~~

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When she first embarked in fiction writing, Maggie thought, Piece of cake. After all, shed been a newspaper reporter for ten years; writing was her daily bread. But Zombified, her first novel about a band of sexy zombies, was anything but easy. The story wasnt conveniently laid out for her at a press conference; it had to be coaxed out of her own imagination. Plot points resisted solving, descriptions meandered, and characters misbehaved. But just when things seemed bleakest, it happened. Maggie fell in love with it all: the zombies, the love story, and even the rituals of writing.

Maggie likes her leading women flawed and her science fiction sexy. She went to school for journalism and political science. She lives in the United States.

Praise for Zombified

Mention zombies and the first thing you tend to think of is one of the creatures on The Walking Dead, not smokinhot gigolos. In her debut novel, Zombified, set in the devastation post-Hurricane Katrina, Maggie LaCroix has managed to create a world of attractive Creole revenants, forced to do the bidding of an evil voodoo master.

When down-on-her-luck journalist Josie Cortez is assigned to cover the arrival of the Katrina refugees in her Texas town, she gets more than just a front-page story. Her attraction to the gorgeous man with the strange eyes, Henri Jolicoeur, leads her into the kind of danger she could never have imagined.

Zombified is unique, fast-paced, and quite humorous in places. Just one look at that cover tells you this is not your usual zombie story.    ~Andrea from Books, Baking and Other Objects of Beauty

~*~About the Author~*~

Elena lives and
writes in a suburb North of Los Angeles.
She has never lived anywhere besides California which is probably a good
thing since she hates being cold and is terrified to drive in the snow. She
loves being a wife and a mother to her three kids and three dogs, although
really the bulldog is the fourth child who has never matured beyond the toddler
stage.

A self-proclaimed
nerd, she has been writing since she was a child. She has only recently,
however, come out of the closet about this to her family and friends.  They now understand better, but not
completely, why she talks about characters in stories as if they are real
people.
